A hotel near Buckingham palace

Putting Buckingham Palace in the spotlight and 6 things we bet you didn’t know!

We at the Sheriff Hotel love Buckingham Palace! It is one of London’s most iconic buildings and tourist attractions and we are located just a stone’s throw away only a 10 to 15 minute walk!

Here’s a little history lesson:

  • Buckingham House (as it was formerly known) under the ownership of the Duke of Buckingham was built in 1703
  • It was acquired as the Queen’s residence in 1761 by King George III
  • It became the official London residence of the monarch on the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837
  • It has undergone a number of refurbishments and took the shape we’re familiar with today in the late 19th Century

6 things we bet you didn’t know about the Palace

  1. You can tell if the Queen is home when the flag flown is the Union Jack it means she is not at home, when it is the Royal Standard then she is!
  2. Nine German bombs hit the Palace during WWII including one that destroyed the Palace Chapel. Near this site a gallery exhibiting works of art from the Royal Collection was opened to the public in 1962
  3. Buckingham palace is also home to 800 members of staff who live there or nearby, not just the Queen!
  4. There are secret passageways underneath the palace connecting it to nearby buildings in case of emergency
  5. The ballroom is the largest room and is 36.6m long and 18m wide. The Queen actually inspects the set up of every state banquet herself even though it can take up to 5 days to lay the table!
  6. There is a £370m 10 year refurbishment plan which is about to start! So we can guarantee that future generations will be able to experience the beautiful Buckingham palace in all its glory!

The State Rooms are open to the public during the summer every year. Official 2017 dates are from 5th August to 24th September. So why not book a summer trip to London to visit the Queen’s home and stay at Sheriff Hotel?
